#Popcat is currently the most popular hashtag on Twitter, but what exactly is it?

Popcat.click is a competitive clicker web game where the goal is to get as many clicks as possible. The rule for the global competition on popcat.click is simple: the more you click or tap any key while on the screen, the more points you score for your country.

The leaderboard is separated by countries and the netizens of the top countries are all reaching for the #1 spot. As of today, August 16th, the website had received 100 billion pops from users all around the world. Thailand has surpassed Taiwan to take the lead with 37 billion pops in just 24 hours, with Taiwan in second place with 20 billion pops and Malaysia in third place with 13 billion pops.

Netizens from across the world are creating memes about the website, many of them creating parallels between the competitive patriotism of the Olympics which is called “Catlympic” by fans.

The website is created by Ed, Josh, and Freddy, who are Computer Science students at the university in the UK. Starting the project in December of 2020, it went viral in April of 2021 and is getting another resurgence this week gathering millions of visits on the page.

The image of the popping cat isn’t new. It started back in October 2020 when Twitter user @XavierBFB posted images of his cat Oatmeal to a Discord server, leading to a chain of edits that resulted in the popping cat meme we have today. The first photo shows Oatmeal smiling, while the second photo is an edited image of Oatmeal's mouth opening widely, resembling an 'O' shape.

The Internet then turned the images into a video by adding a pop sound.

Today, Oatmeal is immortalised on popcat.click, where meme and cat lovers can come to pet the bubbly cat while proudly representing their country.
